Swiss startup FinalSpark has just launch a service that allows scientists to rent cloud access to “biocomputers” made from human neurons for $500 a month.
The system uses organoids (groups of human brain cells) that can “live” and calculate for up to 100 days.
FinalSpark claims that these “biocomputers
could be up to 100,000 times more efficient at training AI than traditional silicon-bas technology.

This approach uses synthetic biology, such as miniature groups of lab-grown cells call organoids, to create a computing architecture.

“As far as I know, we’re the only ones in the world doing this” on a publicly rentable platform, says Fr Jordan, co-founder of FinalSpark.
Neuroplatform uses an array of processing units that each house four spherical brain organoids.
Each 0.5-millimeter-wide organoid is connect to eight electrodes that electrically stimulate neurons within the living sphere; those electrodes also link the organoids to conventional computer networks.

If perfect, this training could eventually allow organoids to mimic silicon-bas AI and serve as processing units with functions similar to today’s CPUs (central processing units) and GPUs (graphics processing units), FinalSpark notes.
